SERVITOR: THE BEAR MAID

A monster based on a very old and ribald song from Brienne's world about a maid who was hoping for a knight but gets a bear instead. It has two forms: a mutant of a dire bear half-decayed, and a delicate maiden with sapphires for eyes meagerly dressed in torn pink silks and fine lace. You cannot possibly hope to win against it and yet you must try all the same; You should stay out of it, and yet you cannot; You must do something, but there is no way you can succeed. You are caught between a rock and a hard place, you belong nowhere, you cannot harden your heart. There is no looking away, you have been consigned to prove yourself over and over until it gets you killed. Perhaps in death you will have proven yourself worthy.

behavior. The Bare Maid uses its two forms to lure and consume prey. It begins in the form of the Maiden, but will transform once it has ensnared prey in its Astonishing Gaze or feels threatened enough to defend itself. The Maiden grows in size and bloats in shape until her dress tears from her form as she sprouts coarse black hair and her limbs elongate into the dire bear that will eat its prey, face first.

honey in her hair. The Maiden is sweet and helpless. Her appearance is disarming: even as they know she can be nothing more than a trap, a target feels compelled to try to help her. It's what a true knight would do, risking themselves in the pursuit of potentially sparing others harm. The shame of leaving her to fend for herself is a crushing presence that drives the target to act.
astonishing gaze. The Maiden's sapphire eyes can capture the mind of prey in its line of sight. If a target cannot resist looking into the creature's mesmerizing eyes there is a chance the target becomes unable to move or act, giving the creature time to transform into the Bear and attack.

weaknesses. The dire bear hunts like a polar bear, classic horror movie style: lumbering, half-blind, relying mostly on scent and the supernatural to track its prey to exhaustion if the Maid's snare doesn't work. Additionally, magic or a magic sword will probably kill the Bare Maid, depending on how frenzied it is. Probably easier to kill the Maiden before she transforms, if you have the speed and the stomach for it.

i'll never dance with a hairy bear. The Bare Maid can be bamboozled with music or dance, overriding its drive to chase down and devour its prey. Depending on the belief in the performance (not the skill with which it is performed), the target has a chance to mesmerize Bear back into Maiden. If used on Maiden, it can interrupt Astonishing Gaze, or provide a distraction to allow another to kill or subdue her in some other manner.
